Is baldness frequent ?
According to certain studies, at least 80% of men and 10% of women suffer from baldness in various forms, regardless of their ethnicity or origins.
What are the causes of baldness ?
Hair loss can be caused by several factors. The most frequent manifestation of this condition is male baldness caused by male hormones. The exact mechanism behind this type of baldness remains unknown. We do not know why hairs on the sides and at the back of the head are more resistant to male hormones.
Is baldness hereditary ?
Genetics play a role in a person’s predisposition to baldness. However, it is impossible to predict if someone will suffer from baldness based on this kind of data alone.
Is baldness an unsolvable problem?
No, there are several possible ways to counteract a baldness problem, including the use of an artificial capillary replacement and follicular transplant. This technique is usually effective and has been tested and proven for over half a century.
Are there any medical and pharmacological treatments for hair loss?
Yes. A first medication, Rogaine (or minoxodil), must be applied to the scalp at least twice a day for the remainder of a person's life. The effect is unpredictable on an eventual regrowth of new hair. If there is a positive effect, it will disappear once the person stops applying the product. Another product, called Propecia, must be taken orally once a day. It can help keep existing hair in place for a longer period. It can also help strengthen hairs that have been weakened by baldness. The possible side effects are rare (in less than 1% of cases: reduced sexual desire and impotence in a manner that is usually temporary and reversible).
What is a follicular transplant or micrograft?
A follicular transplant is an intervention involving the transplantation of your own hair from a donor area (usually the fringe or sides) to a receiving area (the bald zones). The number of hairs per implant usually varies from one to three as it respect the normal pattern of follicular units (the natural unit or grouping of hairs).
At what age can one consider a capillary transplant?
Usually, you need to be at least 25 years old.
Do capillary transplants have a natural appearance?
Since transplants are made according to the natural pattern of hair, by implanting grafts of one to three hairs, the final result looks absolutely natural.
Do all transplanted hairs grow back?
Normally, all transplanted hairs should grow back. If the hairs are not injured during the transplant and the patient heals well, all the hairs should grow back as planned. In practice, physicians cannot guarantee that the hairs will grow back.
Is the transplant permanent?
Transplanted hairs will remain in place as long as natural hairs.
Do you have to be a physician to perform a capillary micrograft?
Yes. Only physician are allowed to perform a follicular transplant. However, the assessment of a micrograft candidate can be done by a hair transplant consultant. A client should always meet the physician before the transplant, because he or she is the most suitable and experienced specialist to choose an effective treatment.
Can the final result be predicted?
The final result depends on several factors. The colour, shape and size of the transplanted hairs are only some of the elements that can affect the outcome. The size of the receiving area is also an important factor. It is essential for a client to have realistic expectations. Once the new hair has grown back, if the volume seems insufficient, he or she can choose to carry out one or several additional sessions.
How many grafts are used per session?
The physician can usually predict the approximate number of grafts required to cover a given area. The most important number to consider will be the actual number of transplanted hairs required for a surface to be covered and that amount will vary from one client to another.
How much does a transplant session usually cost?
In Quebec, the price of a capillary transplant session is usually between $1,500 and $4,000.
Is it possible to wear a hair piece while waiting for the newly transplanted hairs to grow back?
Yes. If the scalp is clean and free of marks or skin problems, it is entirely possible to do so.
Does the transplant leave visible scars?
The scar at the donor site is usually thin and almost invisible. In addition, it is hidden by the remaining hairs on the fringe.
